The Shar Pei has distinctive folds of loose skin covering its body and especially its head, giving it a permanent frown. It is independent and aloof in temperament.
This ancient breed is thought to be a cross between mastiffs and certain Nordic breeds. It was in danger of extinction until a few years ago when a Hong Kong breeder established stock in the USA and elsewhere.
